Bikers’ group shares Christmas spirit to a community of waste pickers

BAUANG, La Union, (PIA) – They have traversed the roads leading to Vigan City and Suyo in Ilocos Sur, Manaoag in Pangasinan, and the different municipalities of La Union, but this time, they headed to a small and humble community in Dupacpac, Acao, in this town.

The Bauang Bike-kadahan capped this year with a simple gift-giving and feeding activity to some 25 families who live through scavenging in the nearby municipal landfill.
Their Christmas activity with the beneficiaries may not be grand but theirs was unique and sincere with many of the members shelling out their personal savings either to give personally or buy some goodies for the children, simple groceries for the mothers and raffling a few items for all.

“It feels good especially for the children that you spend and share a portion of your blessings to us, that even for a day or two we won’t have to rummage through the garbage and pick waste materials,” Dinton Florendo, president of the Acao Scavengers Association, said.
