Bauang Local Government Unit and the Municipal Police Station in cooperation with Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region I conducted the Drug Clearing Operations Seminar at Farmers’ Hall, Bauang Municipal Hall.

The seminar with its theme “Strengthening the Implementation of Barangay Drug Clearing Program” was attended by 117 participants from the 39 barangays with the barangay captains and Municipal Anti-Drug Abuse Council (MADAC) members.

Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin P. de Guzman III in his message said that this day is very important because LGU and the barangays have accomplished a lot for the program on illegal drugs. Time and money have been spent for the program.

He said, “You are the front liners of our LGU so you have to continue the sustainability of our fight against illegal drugs. Our obligation as public officials is to be vigilant, to protect our citizens and our community.”

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) has prepared an integrated action plan on fire, tsunami, earthquake and even an anti-terrorism drill for the safety of every family. The radio and the close circuit television (CCTV) communication systems are highly functional to track lawless elements in the town.

Director Geoffrey C. Tacio of PDEA Region was one of the lecturers. He gave a brief history of the illegal drugs in the Philippines and why the Philippines has become drug infested. According to PDEA, there is unlimited demand for drugs and there is a limited demand reduction initiative in the barangays and validation is still to be done. There is a need to assess each DP whether he is a mild user, moderate or dependent. A flow chart must be followed so that the drug clearing of barangays be finally validated
He urged everyone to envision change coupled with action because this can change Bauang to be a drug free municipality and a drug free Bauang is possible.

He ended his speech by saying “At the end of the day, the final battle against illegal drugs will be fought right in front of every doorstep in the barangay.”

Major Joel P. Lagto, Chief Inspector of PNP Bauang said that everyone must renew his commitment to his barangay and if all these 117 participants become active, then there will be no more problems in Bauang.

He further added, “We have worked hard for the drug clearing, we have met the parameters. We have to safeguard our barangays because grasses are again growing, we need to cut them.

He said that more problems will arise if these 927 drug surrenderers will go back to their old ways so the sin of silence must be avoided.
