Bauang commemorates 72nd Liberation Day

“May the young generation imbibed in their hearts the significance of this day. May we always remember the heroism and gallantry that our veterans did. We know you have sacrificed your lives, your families and even your loved ones just so we will be freed from the bondage and clutches of slavery.”

This was the message of Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin P. de Guzman III when he addressed the veterans of the Agoo-Aringay-Tubao Veterans Post Veterans District, VFP, Region I, the municipal council composed of Vice Mayor Bonifacio Malinao, Sr., Sangguniang Bayan Members Alexander Romeo Obong, Danilo Abuan, George Picardal, Warlito Daus, Barangay Captains, some principals of the public elementary and secondary schools, LGU Department heads, employees and guests.

Mr. Fisher A. Guerrero, Field Service Extension Office Head, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, Region I graced the occasion. He mentioned that the veterans played a crucial role in the liberation of Northern Luzon particularly in Luzon. He expressed his thanks for the invitation given to him.

“We hope that next year or during the 75th celebration of the liberation of Bauang, we can even conduct a medical mission to make the affair more meaningful,” he said.
Vet. Major Leoncio M. Mabanta, Post President of Veterans Post of the 2nd District of La Union and Vet. Tomas G. Llarenas, Jr., Post Coordinator and Liaison Officer, Bauang Chapter led the 30 veterans in blue and white uniforms as they marched around the plaza.

A resolution of the Sangguniang Bayan was awarded to recognize the heroism of the veterans in the liberation of Bauang.
Meanwhile, LGU of Bauang conducted a poster making contest to give importance on the celebration. Inspired by the theme “Veterans’ Heroism in the Liberation of Bauang”, ten public and private secondary schools of Bauang participated in the contest.

Artist Guild of La Union (AGLAUN) members Rodel Rillera and Cesar Dumo critically judged the entries. They came out with a unanimous decision with Carl Josua Bono of Baccuit National High School as champion, Allan Lloyd Lopez of Don Eulogio de Guzman Memorial National High School as first runner up and Mark Arvin Estera of Yeshuah the Messiah Christian Academy, 2nd runner up.

Cash prizes, certificates of recognition and participation were given to participants and coaches.LINK
