Written by Joan Diaz Sabado

For how many years, Melanie and her family, from Palugsi-Limmansangan, have been living in a makeshift house made of canvass and other improvised materials. A kitchen and with a space for sleeping is what makes up the inside of their “house”. Melanie Ladie Martinez and partner Christian Galvan, together with their children aged 6, 3, and 2 are beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or more popularly known as 4Ps. Both parents have irregular source of income, Melanie as a part-time vegetable vendor while Christian a seasonal mango picker.Despite receiving a cash allowance from Pantawid for their children, they do not have enough to provide for the basic needs of their family like shelter.

Mr. Dong Joo - Shin from an NGO from Gangneung, South Korea together with other korean delagates visited Bauang during the Baggak Festival. Mr. Shin together with the Gangneung group handed a cash to Mayor Martin de Guzman to look for a recipient with no house. With the help of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program. Mayor Martin handed over the cash gift to the family of Melanie for the purchase of materials and construction of a sturdier and more comfortable house.
