Bauang, La Union – One of Bauang’s pride, the Bauang Baggak Choir was invited in South Korea for a special performance for the 32nd Taebaek City National Choir Competition which was participated by 30 chorale groups August 22-23. The City Government of Taebaek in Gangwon Province in South Korea lead by Mayor Kim Yeon-Sik, Deputy Mayor Yoon Seok-Gyu and the other City officials warmly welcomed the choir and the delegation from Bauang.

Prior to the invitation of the Taebaek City Government, the Gangwon Teachers Choir of South Korea also performed in Bauang in a Concert Tour last January 24 displaying their culture through their songs and performances. After which, in February 6, the Deputy Mayor of Taebaek City along with some of their key officials also visited Bauang. It is prelude to the forging of a friendship city relation between the two towns.

It was because of the exquisite performances of the Baggak Choir in these events that the Choir was discovered and invited for an all-expense paid trip to Taebaek City to perform during the two-day National Chorale Competition. The Choir sang popular Korean folk songs like Arirang, Doraji, Se Yah (Blue Bird), Spanish song Eres Tu (You are), Latin Exultate, and Filipino songs Kalesa, Paru-paro, Pandanguhan among others. The Choir’s rendition of these songs garnered applauses from the Koreans who watched the event including the judges themselves and the participating choirs.

The group, composed of municipal employees, is led by Consultant for Culture and Arts Ms. Leah Dumuk-Bontogon and renowned conductor Regie Bontogon. Together with their accompanist Molinder B. Cadiz. Since their establishment in 2005, they have been invited to perform in various national, religious, local events and by the Bauang Overseas Workers Association (BOWA-HK) in Hong Kong. Aside from these, they are also active in parish and community singing.

The 12-member choir was joined by Mayor Martin P. De Guzman III, BTC Vice-Chairman Peter Paul Nang, Budget Officer Elpidio Ordoño and Municipal Counsltant Crisanto Palabay in the Korean trip. Aside from Taebaek City, the Municipality is also in the process of forging sister city relations with Sokcho City and Jeongseon County also in Gangwon Province. https://www.facebook.com/bauangbaggakchoir
