Barangay Payocpoc Sur: A DOH Awardee for Best Sanitation Practices

Barangay Payocpoc Sur is one of the two regional finalists who were among the 32 National Awardees for the DOH’s National Search for Barangay with Best Sanitation Practices held at Traders Hotel in Pasay City February 12.

The barangay, under the leadership of PB George B. Picardal, have met the 100 percent access to safe water supply and 100 percent sanitary toilet facilities for each household, on top of their other community-based initiatives in Solid Waste and Wastewater Management, Clean and Green Initiatives, local legislative measures regarding health and sanitation, and allocating a remarkable 50% of their budget for sanitation.

“After Baccuit Sur in 2009 and Parian Oeste in 2011, now Payocpoc Sur, we will continue to encourage and support our other barangays in Bauang to emulate and bring good sanitation practices to the household level,” Mayor Martin De Guzman said. “Assist households still with no sanitary toilet facilities and tap other possible sources of water for your residents, in this way we are a contribution to the Millennium Development Goal on Sanitation,” he added.

“The estimated proportion of the population using safe drinking water sources improved from 85% in 1990 to 92% in 2012. Furthermore, the estimated proportion of the population using improved sanitation facilities increased from 57% in 1990 to 74% in 2012,” Assistant Secretary Dr. Enrique A. Tayag said in his message during the event. “Despite this improvement, about 1 of 12 Filipinos still practice open defacation, thus, a lot of work still needs to be done,” he added.

Aside from brgy. Payocpoc Sur, brgy. Sinapangan Norte in Bangar is also a National Awardee to the Search showcasing 100% household coverage of toilet facility and their initiatives on solid waste management, vermicomposting, among others.

The Department of Health is incentivizing barangays with best sanitation practices nationwide to encourage barangays to make sanitation a priority investment of all LGUs.

Aside from Mayor Martin de Guzman who joined PB Picardal and brgy secretary Eunice Pacio, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Hector T. Beñas, PSI Vinez Flores, MHO Dr. Bernardo Parado, MENRO Wilson Samuel Caluza, RSI Adelfa Fontz, and DOH-CHD Helen Fusilero were also present to receive the award.
