Written by Weekly City Bulletin

Being vital to La Union heritage, identify and diversity, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) will use its offices as pilot area in the implementation of the Iloco Code as per Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Ordinance No. 026-2012 making Iloco as the official Language of the province.

Gov. Manuel C. Ortega instructed all department heads through a written memorandum to get signages with Iloco vernaculars from the office of the Provincial Information and Tourism Officer to be posted in their own offices to serve as a guide and method of instruction to some guests and visitors in the Provincial Capitol.

With the aim of preserving and developing the Iloco language Governor Ortega firmly believes that the implementation if the code will lead to a better and faster communication most especially in the performance of the PGLU’s tasks of bringing the best public service to its constituents.

Bolstered by the first meeting of the La Union Council for language and Culture (LUCLC) last April 25, 2013 at the Diego Silang Hall Capitol Building, the creation of the Technical Working Group responsible in the formulation of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR), which will turn determine all the procedures in the implementation and enforcement of the Code, its limitations and as to who will monitor the possible solution of problems that may arise, was agreed upon.

Also, to maximize the fulfilment of the ordinance, the inclusion of “Ayat Festival” during municipal and city fiesta celebration, on occasion where the participants is going to sing Iloco songs, deliver poems and dance numbers emphasizing Iloco culture was also suggested.

With the presence and participation of the different departments and hospitals of the PGLU, City of San Fernando and the 19 municipalities of La Union, National Agencies, DMMMSU, private and religious sector, broadcast and print media and from the Gunglo dagiti Mannurat Iti Iloco (GUMIL) in the preparation of IRR, the province-wide usage of Iloco language is strongly as sured.
