With this year’s theme “Tapang ng Bayan, Malasakit sa Mamayan” Bauang LGU celebrated Kalayaan 2019 at Bauang Town Plaza, Bauang, La Union.
Outgoing Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin P. de Guzman III, with outgoing Vice Mayor Bonifacio G. Malinao, Sr., Sangguniang Bayan Members Warlito Daus, Jr., Gabriel Sotto, Danilo Abuan, Raymund Ganaden, George Picardal, and SK Chairman Demeliz Nudo, barangay captains, school principals, LGU department heads and employees were in complete attendance.
“Independence is comfortability, the best thing in life that we have. This is something we have to ponder upon. We are not here enjoying it if not because of our great grandfathers. We are now enjoying peace and unity which they sacrificed for us,” the mayor said.
He added that Bauang is the most important of all. He told everyone to protect her and the Bauangenios to be free from hazards in life.
“This is my last speaking engagement with you after my 18 years of committed and fruitful service here in Bauang. Election was over. Whatever is the will of the people, it is the will of God. Respect the elected for they are the voice of the people. Please support, Dr. Menchie de Guzman, our newly elected mayor and the rest of the local government officials elected. Bear with Dr. Menchie. She has her own administrative style. If change be executed by her, please understand her,” he said.
He reminded everyone present that if one is in the government service, he is the property of the people and their compensation comes from the people’s taxes. He told them to work fairly and truthfully for their benefits and satisfaction which is the real essence of democracy.
He told them that there will be more trials and hardships in life and to be prepared for anything that will traverse in their lives. Just keep praying to God. After these trails, one becomes stronger and happier.
“After my 37 years of service, it is no longer my wish to run as a mayor. I am 56 years old and I give way to the younger ones to lead. Select those who are good and responsible leaders. Our town must be led by people with good heart and soul who are willing to serve the people. Our town is our responsibility,” he said.
“This is my last message to you as your mayor. I hope you will cherish our good bonding, the good things we have done for our town. We offer you our peace, for this is the true essence of independence. This is your mayor, saying goodbye in my 18 years of service to all of you,” he finally said.
The celebration culminated with a wreath laying ceremony in front of Dr. Jose Rizal’s monument. It was led by the mayor and other local officials escorted by Philippine National Police of Bauang.
Bauang Baggak Grand Chorale made the event more meaningful as they sang the Doxology, Philippine National Anthem, La Union Hymn, and Bauang Hymn.
SBM Gabriel A. Sotto closed the program with his short remarks.
