West Point Returns San Pedro Bell to PH

WEST POINT, New York — A church bell that once belonged to a Catholic parish in Bauang, La Union, rang for the last time outside a Catholic Chapel here. The bell is returning home.

After being away for more than a hundred years, the San Pedro Bell – baptized and named after a patron saint – received the blessings of a Catholic chaplain during a valediction ceremony at the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Chapel last Friday, April 29.

Nearly a hundred members of the Filipino American community, Philippine Embassy officials, diplomats and scholars, and U.S. Military Academy (USMA) cadets, staff, officers and guests, gathered for the send-off.

“Today is a joyous and happy day for all of us,” said Col. Matthew Pawlikowski, USMA’s Catholic chaplain who officiated the Catholic Mass and led the procession to the site outside the chapel overlooking the Hudson River where the bell rested.

Sending the San Pedro Bell home is “the right and honorable thing to do,” said USMA Chief of Staff Colonel Wayne A. Green in his remarks. “And so we’re here today, in the spirit of friendship and cooperation with our friends from the Philippines, to say farewell to the San Pedro Bell, which has been part of the West Point community for many years, and return it to its rightful place.”

Bauang Summer Sports Fest, an affair to remember

 There was fun, sun, sand along the beaches of Baccuit as Bauang celebrated its 2nd Summer Beach Sports Festival.

Guests, tourists, visitors coming from all walks of life, municipal, barangay officials and their constituents in their colorful uniforms flocked together to enjoy basking under the scorching heat of the sun. They felt the tickling of the hot sand under their feet as they frolicked together to participate in the 2nd Bauang Summer Sports Festival.
Highlighting the three day activity was the inter barangay Olympics participated in by 39 barangays and Bauang Local Government Unit. (LGU).

Showcasing the strength of the 10 participants from each team in the tug of war, each team pulled with all their strength eliminating all the teams with only Barangays Urayong and Bagbag in the championship round. Amidst the cheers of the two barangays Bagbag failed to defend its title with Urayong players standing sturdy as the champion.

Bauang Local Government Unit Awards Agri Farm Implements

To help Bauang farmers improve their farm production, Bauang LGU awarded agri farm imp-lements to more than 200 farmers coming from the 39 barangays of the municipality.

All presidents of the farmers’ association cooperatives received the following implements: 5 unit tractors diesel engine with a complete set and trailers, 10 units of jet matic pump, 30 units of 5HP air cooled diesel with 2x2 hose, 40 units of knapsack fertilizer and pesticide sprayers and 60 PE hose, 1 1/2 540.
 Mayor Martin de Guzman solicited the assistance of Congressman Franny Eriguel of the 2nd District of La Union. Funds came from the tobacco excise tax as mandated from R.A. 8240 and 7171.

DOLE Region I, PCC award 20 Heads Dairy Carabao To Bucayab, Cabalayangan Farmers

“Take care of these gifts and livelihood facilities that government agencies like DOLE and Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) give to you. I know this project becomes successful with the help of barangay officials in its proper ,” these were the words that Grace Y. Ursua, Regional Director, DOLE Region 1 gave as she and her staff turned over 20 heads of dairy carabao to the farmers of Brgy. Bucayab and Cabalayangan, Bauang, La Union at Tejano’s residence.

Mayor Martin de Guzman expressed his thanks to the benefactors of the many gifts they give to them. He told them to take care of the grace that was given to them.

“I know the farmer leaders at Bauang are industrious so this project becomes successful,” he expressed.

He addressed the school children present to drink milk to grow tall and become strong. He said that progress in life is attainable since nothing is impossible with the help of good leaders, cooperation with these agencies and with the monitoring of local government units.
