New libraries, New Hopes for La Union students

Smiles and hopes poured in as the Acts of Hope for the Nation (AHON) Foundation opened up new libraries with new books in La Union on a rainy morning last June 13,2014.

The AHON team, led by its chairman Hector O. Tagaysay, inaugurated 4 public elementary school libraries in La Union namely Aringay Central School, Bauang North Central School, Paringao Elementary School, and Bangar Central School. These libraries will benefit almost 5,000 students who will now have new books to read and learn from.

Each school had their own turnover and inauguration ceremonies as they welcomed the new school year with their new libraries. Aringay Central School made it unique by using a Powerpoint presentation. For a public school, the use of a Powerpoint presentation was a sign that technology was now being utilized to further enhance the learning process.

Anti-Rabies Campaign Up in Bauang

                          A massive anti-rabies vaccination is being undertaken in Bauang. Aside from vaccinating all dogs in all the barangays, a massive information and education campaign is also being implemented. All dogs should be caged or tied as per Municipal Ordinance No. 11, Series of 2007 . This is to control and prevent further cases of rabies.

REDISCOVERING BAUANG: MANUEL E. ARGUILLA (1911-1944)

In a lecture dubbed Throwback Manuel E. Arguilla, the prolific Ilokano short story writer in English, patriot and martyr was relieved and commemorated. Said lecture was slated in time for his birthdate, June 17. National Artist for Literature Francisco Sionil-Jose, a fellow Ilokano writer, was invited speaker.


“In his stories, he depicted the life of ordinary rural folk and farmers, the setting usually is of his native community, Nagrebcan and these works have enriched our Philippine Literature, “F. Sionil-Jose said.


Manuel E. Arguilla was born in Nagrebcan, Bauang, La Union, in June 17, 1911, from parents Crisanto and Margarita Arguilla. His first elementary years were in Calumbaya Elementary School and then to Bauang Central Elementary School. In 1929, he graduated in La Union High School as class salutatorian. Aside from being an editor of their school organ “La Union Tab”, he excelled in the fields of swimming, dancing and in English contests.

Bauang gears up for its 3rd Balik-Bauang Festivities
